New NatPost Column: FedEx Ends With a Whimper, Not a Bang

September 25th, 2008
By Robert Thompson

My latest National Post column is in today’s paper. IIt asks the question, how can an event where the players make no money be so much more intriguing than one where they can win $10M? Here’s a taste:

The year in professional golf did not officially end on Sunday, but the Ryder Cup would have been a fitting finale to an intriguing PGA Tour year. All the storylines were present: It made a superstar out of Anthony Kim, a folk hero out of Boo Weekley and left Nick Faldo’s reputation in tatters, while emphasizing the strengths and smarts of Paul Azinger.

But hold on – there’s more golf left to play. Unfortunately the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoff will end this week with a whimper rather than a bang.

  1. Nick Says:

OK, agreed that the whole Fed Ex/playoffs is a bit of a joke, but this is still one of the bigger tournaments of the year and while Vijay is the Fed Ex champ, he has to do more than just play 72 holes to win this tournament. Finding our who wins a tournament (not necessarily a silly playoff scheme), is why I watch.
