Copetown Woods is
primarily a links style course, but it also features
some enourmous waste bunkers that come into play
on many holes. Quite unique for this area of Canada.
Very reminiscent of what you would normally see
at a Southern U.S. resort course. It also boasts
4 set of tees and some of the largest, most undulating
greens that I have played in some time.
The first hole in
particular features a meandering green that measures
some 59 yards deep. I think I have played entire
holes at other courses that were smaller than this
green! In general , the greens are large and challenging,
but putted fairly true the day we played, particularly
for a course that only opened this past June.
The designer of
this course Dick Kirkpatrick, has also done a nice
job of using the property's existing wetland areas
and incorporating it into this links style design.
These natural areas come into play on the short
par 4 8th hole as well as on the tough par 4 18th.
The 18th hole also shares a stunning dual green
with the 9th hole, in full view of Copetown Woods'
Victorian style clubhouse.
Other notable holes
included par 4 13th hole (pictured below). A tough
tee shot tempts you to try and drive the seemingly
short hole (over water no less). The smart play
is to take a 3 wood and put it in the fairway on
the right, only the longest hitters have a hope
on this one. I also really enjoyed the uphill par
4 5th and the par 3 7th hole, which forced you to
carry a myriad of bunkers to get your tee shot close
to the back left pin we played this fall day.
A great surprise
gem of a golf course, just 15 minutes from Hamilton
and very accessible from Highway 403 Brantford.
Prices were a reasonable $47 Weekdays and $55 on
Weekends.
One word of caution
though, the fescue will not likely be as forgiving
in 2004 as it was for us in late 2003! If you have
played Copetown Woods, let us know what you think.
