Course Preview: Royal Dornoch Golf Club

May 26th, 2008
By Jeff Lancaster

The Royal Dornoch Golf Club is a universally revered gem, 18 holes of pure golfing glory.

Although golf at Dornoch dates back to 1616, the golf club itself dates from 1877 when the Sutherland Golfing Society applied to play golf over these links. It was King Edward VII who bestowed the title ‘Royal’ on Dornoch Golf Club in 1906. As might be expected the club has a rich history and an association with some of the greatest golfers of the past.

The course itself was designed by Old Tom Morris in 1886 and later reworked by notable architects Donald Ross and JH Taylor. It is considered by many to be Old Tom’s greatest achievement.

We’re looking forward to our visit – we’ll bring back as many photos as we can. In the meantime here is a great Dornoch preview video:

    Jeff –

Played Dornoch on Thursday as part of a 9 day trip – it was the highlight of the trip – cancelled our afternoon 18 at Brora and playd Dornoch again. You will not be disapointed – make sure you buy a course guide. The best tip I received from a local – the line on 18th tee is the Glenmorangie distillery. Enjoy!!
