I am a big fan of municipal golf courses – being a public golfer I get to play my fair share of them.
This morning I visited one of my old standards – Tyandaga Municipal Golf Course in Burlington – to see how it was holding up.
The city of Burlington generally keeps this course in great shape, and today was no exception. I would have thought that for a Monday morning the pace of play would have been better, but at least the course rangers seem to be making a concerted efforts to keep the groupsahead moving.
In my mind the signature hole at this course is the tough par-5 17th (above), which plays along a long narrow valley (photographed looking back from above the hole). Putting a strong tee shot in play is a must on this hole.
Another strong hole is par-3 9th hole (above), that plays through a tight chute and has a tricky green that hugs the hazard to the right of the hole. Good 3 if you can make one here.

Tyandaga’s 10th hole (above). You can see some of the distinctive changes in elevation that Tyandaga is famous for in this picture. Seemingly cut into the escarpment, the rolling land of this course provides a challenging test for any golfer.

Just thought we would let everyone know that we just launched a series of upgrades to our interactive google maps.
This included simplified navigation, easier to read layout, additional information like phone number & website in the info windows and a few other subtle tweaks.
We should hopefully have a few more upgrades launching in the coming weeks.
Also, thanks to the many visitors who emailed us with updated latitudes and longitudes for many of the courses – your help is much appreciated. We have updated more than 200 course locations in the past month. Keep them coming!!
Cheers,Â

Got a chance to play Crosswinds GC in Milton on the Canada Day long weekend.
An interesting course that is definitely worth checking out. Here’s a quick look…
Its characterized by its many bunkers and the distinctive collection areas around many of its greens (see #18 below). Â
[photopress:DSCN1269.JPG,full,centered]
Although its built on a fairly flat site, there is ample fairway bunkering and water on about 1/3 of its holes, enough to keep golfers honest.
But the most distinctive part of this course is its diabolical, undulating greens, like on the 16th hole (below) and the tough 6th hole (2nd below).

This course has definitely been a welcome addition to the the Milton/Oakville golf scene…at $75 peak time green fee rate it provides a pretty good value for the dollar.
